The Three Core NBA Betting Formats Explained
Before placing a wager on today's NBA games, understanding how bookmakers express risk and reward is vital. The three standard odds formats used across global sportsbooks are:
1. Decimal Odds (Philippine & International Standard)
Decimal odds are the most straightforward format and are used by domestic PAGCOR licensed sportsbooks throughout the Philippines and across Europe. The decimal number represents the total return for every 1 unit staked, including the original wager.
Total Payout = Stake × Decimal Odds | Net Profit = Stake × (Decimal Odds - 1)
Example: If the Boston Celtics are priced at 1.75, a PHP 1,000 bet yields PHP 1,750 total payout (PHP 750 profit). If the underdog is priced at 2.15, a PHP 1,000 bet yields PHP 2,150 total payout (PHP 1,150 profit).
2. American Odds (Moneyline Format)
Common in North America, American odds use plus (+) and minus (-) signs relative to a $100 baseline:
- Minus sign (-): Indicates the favorite. The number shows how much you must risk to win $100 profit (e.g., -150 means bet $150 to win $100).
- Plus sign (+): Indicates the underdog. The number shows the net profit earned on a $100 stake (e.g., +130 means bet $100 to win $130).
3. Fractional Odds (Traditional UK Format)
Expressed as a ratio such as 5/2 or 10/11. The numerator represents the profit relative to the denominator stake.

Converting Odds to Implied Probability
The most crucial skill in sports betting is converting quoted odds into percentage probabilities to determine whether a line offers genuine value:
Probability (%) = (1 / Decimal Odds) × 100
